The Czech Centre in Sofia has announced the conclusion of its operations in Bulgaria, following a decision by the Director General of the Czech Centres network. The institution confirmed that its cultural and educational activities in the country will cease. Planned events are scheduled to take place through the end of May.
The announcement coincided with the Centre’s 77th anniversary on May 5th. On this date, the facility, which serves as one of the oldest Czech institutions of its kind abroad and a long-standing cultural organization in Bulgaria, marked its anniversary. The history of the cultural exchange dates back to May 5, 1949.
At that time, an art and craft shop named Ceskoslovenska tvorba Orbis opened in Sofia, established under an intergovernmental cultural agreement between Czechoslovakia and Bulgaria (1947). The Prague counterpart was Bulharska tvorba. Following the emergence of the independent Czech Republic and Slovak Republic in January 1993, the Czech Republic established the modern Czech Centres to succeed the former Czechoslovak Centres abroad.
The closure marks the end of a significant chapter for Czech cultural outreach in Bulgaria. The Centre has served as a key cultural link, providing educational and artistic programming for decades.
