Dechev: “Old Cops Are Using Dirty Tricks to Neutralize Interior Ministry’s Secretary General”

Acting Interior Minister Emil Dechev stated on Friday that individuals associated with the police force were allegedly attempting to undermine and neutralize Georgi Kandev, the acting Secretary General of the Interior Ministry. Earlier in the day, Kandev reported in a video message that he faced pressure to resign due to false testimonies being presented against him at the Sofia City Prosecution Office. Following these reports, acting Prime Minister Andrey Gurov issued a video statement characterizing the situation as a “shameful attempt at revanchism.” Gurov noted that following actions taken to curb attacks on democracy and secure funds intended to undermine elections, a conspiracy against the Secretary General had reportedly begun.

Dechev publicly expressed his full support for Kandev, stating he had no doubt regarding his integrity. He added that the future interior minister would be responsible for resolving the developing scandal. The Minister also highlighted the efforts of the caretaker Government and the Interior Ministry over the past two months, claiming they demonstrated a commitment to minimizing electoral crimes.

Dechev asserted that these achievements were the result of significant effort and resolve against forces he described as seeking to subvert the will of the Bulgarian electorate during elections. He further alleged that adversaries in this dispute possessed powerful allies within the judiciary. The statements underscore a developing internal conflict within the government concerning leadership roles within the interior sector.
