Dechev: “Old Cops Are Using Dirty Tricks to Neutralize Interior Ministry’s Secretary General”

Acting Interior Minister Emil Dechev publicly accused elements within the police force of employing methods to undermine and neutralize Georgi Kandev, the acting Secretary General of the Interior Ministry. Earlier, Kandev had issued a video statement alleging that he faced pressure to resign due to the submission of false testimony at the Sofia City Prosecution Office. Adding to the political tension, acting Prime Minister Andrey Gurov characterized the developing situation as a “shameful attempt at revanchism.” Gurov noted that the alleged conspiracy against the Secretary General emerged after the government successfully halted attacks on democracy and seized millions of euros intended to undermine electoral processes.

Dechev subsequently voiced his support for Kandev, expressing confidence in his integrity and suggesting that the future interior minister would address the “fabricated scandal.” The minister also highlighted the recent efforts of the caretaker Government and the Interior Ministry, stating they demonstrated a commitment to minimizing electoral malpractice. Dechev further elaborated that this effort required significant resolve against forces he described as attempting to subvert the will of Bulgarian citizens during elections. He specified that his adversary included powerful allies situated within the judiciary system.

The statements underscore a period of heightened political scrutiny concerning the management and integrity of the country’s interior security apparatus.
