An honorary consulate of the Russian Federation was opened in Novi Sad, a northern Serbian city, according to local media reports on Friday. Dusan Bajatovic, the director of Srbijagaz and a senior official within the Socialist Party of Serbia, was appointed as the consulate’s consul. The opening ceremony was attended by several notable figures, including Patriarch Porfiry, Russian Ambassador to Serbia Aleksandr Botsan-Kharchenko, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Alexander Grushko, Novi Sad Assembly Speaker Dina Vucinic, and former minister Aleksandar Vulin.

During the event, Bajatovic emphasized the historical connection between Serbs and Russians, noting that while the bond is recognized, there remains a gap in knowledge regarding Russia’s culture, natural heritage, and scientific advancements. He highlighted the role of the Russian Historical Society, which he stated was established with assistance from Aleksandar Vulin, and whose aims include safeguarding historical accuracy. Bajatovic also announced plans for increased cultural and academic ties.

He stated the goal of fostering student exchanges and cultural cooperation between the two nations. Furthermore, he announced the establishment of another Russian school in the region. According to Bajatovic, the initiative seeks to promote knowledge derived from Russia, countering the perception that all culture originates solely from Western sources, thereby strengthening the relationship between Russia and the populace of Novi Sad.
