The “For the Freedom of a Nation” exhibition, organized by the St. St. Cyril and Methodius National Library and the State Archives Agency, opens at the Bulgarian Cultural and Information Centre in Skopje on Tuesday.
The display commemorates the 150th anniversary of the April Uprising. The collection features over 130 historical documents, encompassing protocols, letters, telegrams, appeals, and certificates. These materials provide comprehensive documentation regarding the preparation, execution, suppression, and subsequent consequences of the April Uprising.
The scope of the exhibition is broad, illuminating the international response to the revolutionary period while also presenting Ottoman documents that offer insight into the perspectives of both local and central Ottoman authorities. Among the key authors represented in the documents are prominent historical figures such as Hristo Botev, Vasil Levski, Lyuben Karavelov, and Stefan Stambolov. The display showcases a mix of well-known and previously unseen materials, tracing the events across various revolutionary districts and highlighting the role of the Bulgarian emigre community alongside the international reaction.
The presentation underscores the depth of the region’s cultural history. The exhibition was formally inaugurated in Sofia on April 20, held under the patronage of President Iliana Iotova and supported financially by the Ministry of Culture. This comprehensive display serves as a vital resource for understanding the multifaceted nature of the struggle for national self-determination during that era.
