The latest issue of BTA’s LIK magazine is dedicated to the 150th anniversary of the April Uprising in 1876. The Bulgarian News Agency’s thematic publication explores the uprising through its archives, presenting historical information and documentation from commemorations held over the years within BTA’s news service and bulletins. The issue also incorporates commentary from educators, public figures, and local community representatives from the revolutionary districts associated with the uprising’s history.
The launch event for the magazine is scheduled for Monday, April 20, at the St. Cyril and Methodius School in Koprivshtitsa, marked as the Day of the First Gunshot. This event will be jointly streamed via video link with BTA’s national press clubs both in Bulgaria and internationally.
Partners in the presentation include Koprivshtitsa Municipality and the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences, which will also release its own publication, “150 Years Since the April Uprising.”
BTA Director General Kiril Valchev noted that the issue summarizes discussions held at national press clubs and in the centers of the four revolutionary districts: Veliko Tarnovo, Sliven, Vratsa, and Panagyurishte. He stated that the discussions emphasized key lessons from the April Uprising relevant to the present, concluding that the uprising’s ultimate outcome was Bulgaria’s freedom. Journalist Boyko Vassilev remarked that conversations about the April Uprising remain relevant to understanding modern Bulgaria.
Further analysis within LIK discusses the youth of the uprising’s leaders and their choice to pursue freedom over established stability. Prof. Georgi Valchev observed that these revolutionaries chose to “be” rather than simply “have.” Corresponding Member Prof.
Atanas Semov described the April Uprising as the “greatest collective endeavor of the Bulgarian people.” The LIK timeline compiles archival reports on the uprising, spanning from BTA’s founding in 1898 to the present.
