Medical Academy Acquires New Equipment for Air Medical Evacuation

The Military Medical Academy (MMA) has acquired advanced, high-specification equipment, significantly enhancing its capacity for air medical evacuation of critically ill and injured patients, according to the hospital’s press centre. Five complete sets of new apparatus have been procured. This specialized gear includes vital signs monitors, ventilators, infusion pumps, oxygen cylinders, and supplementary items such as defibrillators and suction pumps.

These integrated systems ensure that intensive care and resuscitation capabilities can be maintained throughout long-distance transport. With this new inventory, the MMA is now equipped to conduct simultaneous air evacuations for up to five critically ill patients who require continuous monitoring and highly specialized treatment during flight. The newly acquired equipment is certified for onboard aircraft use and can be implemented immediately, ensuring a rapid response capability during emergencies.

The MMA remains the sole hospital in Bulgaria that combines specialized technological resources with trained teams dedicated to air medical evacuation. Operating in close coordination with the Bulgarian Air Force, its personnel are prepared to respond to mass disasters, accidents, and military conflicts necessitating the rapid stabilization and evacuation of numerous casualties. Prof Lyubomir Aleksiev, head of the Department of Aviation and Maritime Medicine at the Academy, stated that this acquisition substantially improves the ability to deliver medical care under extreme conditions.

He noted that air medical evacuation demands not only advanced technology but also highly trained teams capable of operating effectively in dynamic, high-risk environments. The Academy maintains operational readiness through regular training flights simulating various challenging scenarios, thereby improving coordination between its medical and aviation structures.
