The Military Medical Academy (MMA) has acquired advanced equipment, enhancing its capabilities for air medical evacuation of critically ill and injured patients, according to the hospital’s press center. The acquisition includes five complete sets of vital monitoring systems, ventilators, infusion pumps, oxygen cylinders, and additional gear such as defibrillators and suction pumps. These sophisticated systems ensure that intensive care and resuscitation capabilities can be sustained during extended transport periods.
With this new equipment, the MMA is now capable of conducting simultaneous air evacuations for up to five critically ill patients who require continuous monitoring and specialized treatment while airborne. The purchased systems are certified for onboard aircraft use and can be implemented immediately, ensuring a rapid response during emergencies. The MMA remains the sole hospital in Bulgaria combining specialized equipment with trained teams for air medical evacuation.
Operating in close coordination with the Bulgarian Air Force, the academy’s teams are equipped to respond to mass disasters, accidents, and military conflicts that necessitate the rapid evacuation and stabilization of numerous casualties. Prof Lyubomir Aleksiev, head of the Department of Aviation and Maritime Medicine at MMA, stated that the new equipment significantly boosts the ability to deliver medical care in extreme environments. He emphasized that air medical evacuation requires both advanced technology and highly trained teams capable of functioning in dynamic, high-risk settings.
The academy maintains high operational readiness through regular training flights simulating various challenging scenarios.
