The Military Medical Academy (MMA) has acquired new, high-specification equipment to enhance its air medical evacuation capabilities for critically ill and injured patients. According to the hospital’s press centre, five complete sets of advanced gear have been purchased. This new equipment includes vital signs monitors, ventilators, infusion pumps, oxygen cylinders, alongside additional items such as defibrillators and suction pumps.
These integrated systems are designed to maintain intensive care and resuscitation readiness throughout long-distance transport. With this new capability, the MMA can simultaneously manage the air evacuation of up to five critically ill patients who require continuous monitoring and highly specialized treatment during flight. The purchased equipment is certified for onboard aircraft use and can be installed immediately, ensuring a rapid response during emergencies.
The Military Medical Academy remains the sole hospital in Bulgaria combining specialized equipment with trained teams for air medical evacuation. In coordination with the Bulgarian Air Force, its teams are prepared to respond to mass disasters, accidents, and military conflicts requiring the rapid evacuation and stabilization of numerous casualties. Prof Lyubomir Aleksiev, head of the Department of Aviation and Maritime Medicine at MMA, stated that the new equipment significantly boosts the academy’s capacity to deliver care in extreme environments, emphasizing that success requires both technology and highly trained personnel.
The academy maintains high operational readiness through regular training flights simulating various challenging scenarios.
