Medical Academy Acquires New Equipment for Air Medical Evacuation

The Military Medical Academy (MMA) has updated its capabilities for air medical evacuation following the acquisition of new, high-specification equipment, according to the hospital’s press centre. Five complete sets of advanced medical gear have been procured, which includes vital signs monitors, ventilators, infusion pumps, oxygen cylinders, defibrillators, and suction pumps. This new equipment enhances the academy’s capacity to maintain intensive care and resuscitation readiness during extended-distance transport.

With these systems, the MMA can now conduct simultaneous air evacuation for up to five critically ill patients who require continuous monitoring and highly specialized treatment while airborne. The procured systems are certified for onboard aircraft use and are ready for immediate installation, ensuring a rapid response capability during emergencies. The MMA remains the sole hospital in Bulgaria that combines specialized medical equipment with trained teams dedicated to air medical evacuation.

In collaboration with the Bulgarian Air Force, its teams are equipped to respond to mass disasters, accidents, and military conflicts by facilitating the rapid evacuation and stabilization of numerous casualties. Prof. Lyubomir Aleksiev, head of the Department of Aviation and Maritime Medicine at the MMA, stated that the equipment significantly boosts the academy’s ability to provide care in extreme conditions, noting that air medical evacuation demands both advanced technology and highly skilled personnel.

To maintain operational readiness, the medical teams conduct regular training flights simulating various challenging scenarios.
