An exhibition titled “Cycling in Sofia” opened on Monday in front of the National Palace of Culture, timed to coincide with the passage of the Giro d’Italia cycling race through Bulgaria. The display was presented collaboratively by the Sofia Municipality and the Sofia – European Capital of Sport Foundation. The opening ceremony was attended by dignitaries, including caretaker Youth and Sports Minister Dimitar Iliev, alongside notable Bulgarian cyclists and prominent photographers.
The collection features over 100 unique photographs, many of which have not been previously published. These images commemorate significant moments and key figures that have placed the Bulgarian capital within the history of competitive cycling. The exhibition serves as a visual retrospective of the sport’s deep connection to the city of Sofia.
Among the highlights displayed is a photograph of Nikolay Mihaylov, recognized as the sole Bulgarian participant in the Giro d’Italia and the nation’s most successful rider over the last fifteen years. Furthermore, visitors can view historical images documenting Bulgaria’s notable achievement in Olympic cycling at the 1980 Moscow Games, where the team secured a sixth-place finish in the 100 km team road race. The curated display offers the public a comprehensive look at the legacy of athletic achievement in the region.
By showcasing these moments, the organizers aim to celebrate the passion for the sport and its lasting cultural impact on the identity of Sofia. The exhibition provides a visual narrative connecting modern sporting events with Bulgaria’s rich cycling heritage.
