An exhibition titled “Cycling in Sofia” recently opened in front of the National Palace of Culture, timed to coincide with the passage of the Giro d’Italia cycling race through Bulgaria. The display was organized by the Sofia Municipality and the Sofia – European Capital of Sport Foundation. The opening ceremony was attended by several dignitaries, including the caretaker Youth and Sports Minister, Dimitar Iliev, alongside notable Bulgarian cyclists, prominent photographers, and representatives from the municipality.

The exhibition features over 100 unique photographs, many of which are previously unpublished. These images serve to commemorate significant moments and key figures that have contributed to the history of the Bulgarian capital through the sport of cycling. The collection provides a comprehensive visual narrative of the sport’s impact on the region.

Among the photographic highlights is work by Nikolay Mihaylov, who is noted as the only Bulgarian participant in the Giro d’Italia and the nation’s most successful rider over the last fifteen years. Furthermore, the exhibition pays tribute to Bulgaria’s major athletic achievements in cycling, including images documenting the country’s sixth-place finish in the 100 km team road race during the 1980 Moscow Olympic Games. The display offers visitors a deep look into the cultural and athletic significance of cycling within Sofia.
