An exhibition titled “Cycling in Sofia” opened on Monday near the National Palace of Culture, coinciding with the passage of the Giro d’Italia cycling race through Bulgaria. The presentation was organized by the Sofia Municipality and the Sofia – European Capital of Sport Foundation. The opening ceremony was attended by several notable figures, including the caretaker Youth and Sports Minister, Dimitar Iliev, alongside prominent Bulgarian cyclists and photographers.
The exhibition features over 100 unique photographs, many of which are being shown for the first time. The collection serves to commemorate significant moments and notable personalities that have placed the Bulgarian capital within the history of the sport of cycling. Among the displayed images is work by Nikolay Mihaylov, who is recognized as the only Bulgarian participant in the Giro d’Italia and the country’s most successful rider over the last fifteen years.
Furthermore, the exhibition provides visual documentation of Bulgaria’s notable achievements in Olympic cycling, specifically showcasing the sixth-place finish achieved during the 100 km team road race at the 1980 Moscow Games. The display offers a comprehensive visual journey through the history of cycling in Sofia, celebrating both its athletic triumphs and its cultural impact on the city. The event highlights the enduring connection between the city and the sport, drawing attention to past glories and the ongoing dedication of Bulgarian athletes.
