2, 1974: Fashion Show in Ruse Presents 300 New Models

Archive photos from the Bulgarian Tourist Association (BTA) document a significant fashion show held on May 2, 1974, in Ruse, along the Danube River. The event showcased new collections from several major manufacturing enterprises, including Boriana from Cherven Bryag, Arda in Ruse, Sanya in Pleven, Burya in Gabrovo, Druzhba in Varna, Mizia in Pleven, and the entity representing Bulgaria in Plovdiv. One of the photographs also captures young pop singer Tanya Emilova performing for the assembled audience.

The participating companies reflected the structured nature of the Bulgarian textile industry during the People’s Republic era (1946–1989), where fashion and textile manufacturing were state-owned and centrally planned. Production efforts were directed toward mass output for the domestic market and for export to other Eastern Bloc (Comecon) nations, notably the Soviet Union. The participating firms have extensive histories.

Arda, an iconic clothing manufacturer based in Ruse, was established in 1932, and the company had recently opened a new facility in the city center in 1968. Boriana was founded in 1968. Mizia was established earlier, in 1960.

Furthermore, the scale of industry growth was evident through state planning, such as the 1972 approval by the Council of Ministers for the expansion of Sanya’s textile factory in Pleven. This 1974 fashion show thus serves as a snapshot of the centralized industrial output and commercial presentation defining Bulgarian
