Exhibition “Cycling in Sofia” Opens at National Palace of Culture to Mark Giro d’Italia Passage through Bulgaria

An exhibition titled “Cycling in Sofia” opened on Monday, marking the passage of the Giro d’Italia cycling race through Bulgaria. The display, organized by the Sofia Municipality and the Sofia – European Capital of Sport Foundation, paid tribute to the rich history of the sport within the capital city. The opening ceremony was attended by notable figures, including the caretaker Youth and Sports Minister, Dimitar Iliev, renowned Bulgarian cyclists, and prominent photographers.

The exhibition features over 100 unique photographs, many of which are being shown for the first time, commemorating significant moments and key personalities in the history of cycling in Sofia. The collection serves as a visual archive of the sport’s impact on the Bulgarian capital. Among the displayed images is notable work by Nikolay Mihaylov, who is recognized as Bulgaria’s most successful rider over the last fifteen years and the sole Bulgarian participant in the Giro d’Italia.

Furthermore, the exhibition provides historical context by showcasing images from Bulgaria’s most significant Olympic achievement in the sport: a sixth-place finish in the 100 km team road race at the 1980 Moscow Games. Through this comprehensive display, the organizers have provided the public with a detailed look at the cultural and sporting legacy of cycling in Sofia. The event successfully utilized the momentum generated by the international passage of the Giro d’Italia to celebrate the enduring connection between the city and its athletic achievements.
