An exhibition titled “Cycling in Sofia” opened on Monday, coinciding with the passage of the Giro d’Italia cycling race through Bulgaria. The display was organized by the Sofia Municipality in collaboration with the Sofia – European Capital of Sport Foundation. The opening ceremony was attended by dignitaries, including the caretaker Youth and Sports Minister Dimitar Iliev, several prominent Bulgarian cyclists, and notable photographers.
The exhibition features over 100 unique photographs, many of which are being shown publicly for the first time. These images serve to commemorate significant moments and key figures in the history of cycling within the Bulgarian capital. The collection provides a visual archive of the sport’s rich heritage in Sofia.
Among the highlights displayed is a photograph of Nikolay Mihaylov, recognized as the only Bulgarian participant to have completed the Giro d’Italia and noted as the country’s most successful rider over the past fifteen years. Furthermore, visitors can view historical images documenting Bulgaria’s most notable achievement in Olympic cycling—a sixth-place finish in the 100 km team road race during the 1980 Moscow Games. The display successfully captures the enduring connection between the city of Sofia and the sport of cycling.
