An exhibition titled “Cycling in Sofia” opened on Monday near the National Palace of Culture in Sofia. The display was organized by the Sofia Municipality and the Sofia – European Capital of Sport Foundation, coinciding with the passage of the Giro d’Italia cycling race through Bulgaria. The opening ceremony was attended by several dignitaries, including the caretaker Youth and Sports Minister, Dimitar Iliev, alongside prominent Bulgarian cyclists and photographers.
The exhibition features more than 100 unique photographs, many of which are newly revealed, offering a comprehensive look at the significant moments and figures that have shaped the history of cycling in the Bulgarian capital. The collection serves as a visual tribute to the sport’s enduring connection with Sofia. Among the photographic highlights is work by Nikolay Mihaylov, recognized as the only Bulgarian participant in the Giro d’Italia and the nation’s most successful cyclist over the past fifteen years.
Furthermore, visitors can view historical images documenting Bulgaria’s notable achievement at the 1980 Moscow Olympic Games, specifically the team road race where the country secured a sixth-place finish in the 100 km event. The display aims to memorialize the major events and personalities that have contributed to the rich sporting heritage of the city. By presenting these archival and new images, the exhibition not only celebrates recent athletic feats but also preserves the historical narrative of cycling in Sofia for the public.
