An exhibition titled “Cycling in Sofia” was inaugurated on Monday, coinciding with the passage of the Giro d’Italia cycling race through Bulgaria. The display, organized by the Sofia Municipality and the Sofia – European Capital of Sport Foundation, was held in front of the National Palace of Culture. The opening ceremony was attended by dignitaries, including caretaker Youth and Sports Minister Dimitar Iliev, alongside notable Bulgarian cyclists, photographers, and representatives from the municipality.
The exhibition features over 100 unique photographs, many of which are being shown for the first time, chronicling significant moments and key figures in the history of cycling within the Bulgarian capital. The collection pays tribute to the sport’s enduring connection with Sofia. Among the photographic highlights is documentation featuring Nikolay Mihaylov, recognized as the sole Bulgarian competitor in the Giro d’Italia and the nation’s most successful rider over the past fifteen years.
Furthermore, the exhibition provides visual records of Bulgaria’s significant athletic achievements, including the 1980 Moscow Olympic Games, where the country secured a sixth-place finish in the 100 km team road race. The display serves as a comprehensive visual archive, commemorating the major milestones and celebrated personalities that have etched the sport into the cultural and sporting narrative of Sofia. The presentation underscores the deep-rooted connection between the city, its citizens, and the passion of competitive cycling.
