Speaking during the Eighth Summit of the European Political Community in Yerevan, Armenia, the president noted that the initiative carries significance beyond mere economic benefits, particularly amid geopolitical divisions and military conflicts. The discussion on the corridor was attended by heads of state and government from Greece, Moldova, Ukraine, Serbia, and Romania.

The Vertical Gas Corridor is presented as a strategic effort designed to enhance energy security and diversify natural gas supplies across Southeastern, Eastern, and Central Europe. During her remarks, Iotova highlighted Bulgartransgaz as an originator of the concept for sustainable expansion of regional gas transmission infrastructure. Iotova briefed participants on Bulgaria’s infrastructure plans, detailing upgrades such as increased transmission capacity from Greece to Bulgaria by 2026 to boost northbound flows from liquefied natural gas terminals.

Furthermore, capacity expansion from Bulgaria to Romania is planned to secure greater supply to Eastern and Central Europe, alongside an upgrade to the interconnection point in Stara Zagora by 2027. The president asserted that Bulgaria is establishing itself as a vital regional hub for gas distribution, possessing a developed network connecting neighboring countries. She stated that the country plays a key role in ensuring north–south flows, supporting diversification via Greek LNG access, and strengthening ties with Romania and Serbia.

Iotova concluded that the Vertical Gas Corridor demonstrates the potential of strategic partnership, representing not just pipelines, but a shared commitment to energy independence and regional stability.
