President Iliana Iotova stated that the Vertical Gas Corridor holds strategic importance for Europe’s energy security, according to her press secretariat. The president noted that the initiative carries significant political weight, alongside its economic benefits, particularly amid current geopolitical divisions and military conflicts. Discussions concerning the role of the corridor were held during the Eighth Summit of the European Political Community in Yerevan, Armenia, with attendance from leaders representing Greece, Moldova, Ukraine, Serbia, and Romania.
The Vertical Gas Corridor is described as a strategic initiative designed to enhance energy security and diversify natural gas supplies across Southeastern, Eastern, and Central Europe. In her remarks, Iotova pointed to Bulgartransgaz as an initiator of the concept and the first operator to invest in the construction of the corridor. Iotova briefed participants on Bulgaria’s planned gas infrastructure upgrades.
Specific plans include increasing transmission capacity from Greece to Bulgaria by 2026 to support greater northbound flows from liquefied natural gas terminals. Additionally, capacity between Bulgaria and Romania is slated for enhancement to secure increased supply to Eastern and Central Europe. By 2027, the interconnection point in Stara Zagora is scheduled for capacity expansion.
The president emphasized Bulgaria’s role as a crucial regional hub for gas distribution, possessing a developed network that supports north–south flows and strengthens connectivity with neighboring countries. Iotova asserted that the Vertical Gas Corridor demonstrates the potential of strategic partnership, representing a shared commitment to energy independence and regional development through infrastructure investment.
