2, 1974: Fashion Show in Ruse Presents 300 New Models

On May 2, 1974, a fashion show took place in Ruse on the Danube, featuring 300 new models presented by several prominent Bulgarian manufacturing enterprises. According to preserved archives from BTA, the event showcased the contributions of multiple fashion houses, including Boriana from Cherven Bryag, Arda in Ruse, Sanya in Pleven, Burya in Gabrovo, Druzhba in Varna, Mizia in Pleven, and Bulgaria in Plovdiv. One of the historical photos from the event captures the young pop singer Tanya Emilova performing for the audience.

The participating companies represent significant aspects of Bulgaria’s industrial history. Boriana, located in Cherven Bryag, was established in 1968. Arda, an iconic clothing manufacturer in Ruse, was founded in 1932, and the company opened a new facility in the city center in 1968.

Historically, the fashion and textile sectors in the People’s Republic of Bulgaria (1946–1989) operated under state ownership and central planning. This industry primarily focused on mass production intended for the domestic market and for export to other Eastern Bloc nations, particularly the Soviet Union. Furthermore, the expansion of the Sanya textile factory in Pleven was conceptually approved by the Council of Ministers of the People’s Republic of Bulgaria in 1972, and Mizia was founded in 1960.

The 1974 fashion show in Ruse thus provided a snapshot of the structured, state-driven nature of the national fashion industry at that time.
