Gas Corridor Key to Europe’s Energy Security, President Iotova Says in Armenia

President Iliana Iotova stated that the Vertical Gas Corridor holds strategic importance for Europe’s energy security. According to the President’s press secretariat, the initiative possesses not only economic value but also political significance amid current geopolitical divisions and military conflicts. Discussions concerning the corridor’s role took place during the Eighth Summit of the European Political Community in Yerevan, Armenia, attended by heads of state and government from Greece, Moldova, Ukraine, Serbia, and Romania.

The Vertical Gas Corridor is designed to enhance energy security and diversify natural gas supplies across Southeastern, Eastern, and Central Europe. During her address, the President noted that Bulgartransgaz was among the originators of the concept and was the first operator to initiate targeted investments for the corridor’s construction. Iotova provided updates on Bulgaria’s gas infrastructure development.

Plans include increasing transmission capacity from Greece to Bulgaria by 2026 to support greater northbound flows from liquefied natural gas terminals, alongside boosting capacity from Bulgaria to Romania to secure Eastern and Central European supplies. Furthermore, the interconnection point in Stara Zagora is scheduled for capacity enhancement by 2027. The President stated that Bulgaria is positioning itself as a vital regional hub for natural gas distribution, possessing a developed transmission network linking neighboring countries.

She emphasized the country’s role in ensuring north-south flows and supporting diversification through access to Greek LNG terminals. The President concluded that the corridor represents more than just pipelines; it symbolizes a shared commitment to energy independence and stability through strategic partnership.
