‘s Social Democratic Party, Alliance for the Union of Romanians to Table No-Confidence Vote Against Bolojan Government

The Social Democratic Party (PSD) and the opposition Alliance for the Union of Romanians (AUR) have announced their joint intention to table a no-confidence motion against the government led by Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan. The declaration came following the resignation of several PSD ministers on April 23. The PSD issued a statement asserting that the ministerial resignations formalized the party’s withdrawal of political backing from Mr.

Bolojan. According to the statement, the Prime Minister no longer possesses the parliamentary majority required to sustain his leadership. Meanwhile, Petrisor Peiu of AUR clarified that their cooperation with the PSD is limited solely to this specific motion.

AUR stated its objective is to precipitate early elections, arguing that the current administration is incapable of managing the national economy. In response to the mounting political pressure, Bolojan stated that he would not resign and intends to continue fulfilling his mandate while developing plans for a minority government. Amid the instability, President Nicusor Dan conducted talks with leaders from the ruling coalition during the week of April 20-26.

The President confirmed that discussions excluded cooperation with anti-Western elements, specifically naming AUR. These consultations focused on critical national programs, including the National Recovery and Resilience Plan, OECD accession, and the EU defense instrument SAFE. The political maneuvering highlights significant fractures within the ruling coalition, as the major social democratic party withdraws its support, directly challenging the stability of the government under Bolojan.
