A conference marking the 150th anniversary of the 1876 April Uprising was held at the History Museum in Panagyurishte. This event concluded a series of discussions organized by the Bulgarian News Agency (BTA) to foster dialogue surrounding the uprising’s centennial milestone. Participants included BTA Director General Kiril Valchev, BNR Director General Milen Mitev, Prof.
Georgi Valchev, Panagyurishte Mayor Zhelyazko Gagov, journalist Boyko Vassilev, and Assoc. Prof. Atanas Shopov.
BTA Director General Valchev stated that discussions on the April Uprising revive the memory of those who sacrificed for Bulgaria’s freedom. He highlighted that the talks, held across the four revolutionary districts—Veliko Tarnovo, Sliven, Vratsa, and Panagyurishte—as well as Ruse and Giurgiu, emphasized the need to prioritize long-term goals over immediate difficulties. He also announced that the 2026 BTA Meeting of Bulgarian Media would focus on “Media and Leaders” in Hungary.
BNR Director General Mitev stressed the media’s crucial role in shaping public opinion. He argued that learning from the April Uprising involves recognizing the foundational importance of hope and willingness to sacrifice. Prof.
Valchev urged viewing history as a living element, advocating for moving beyond mere slogans to address Bulgaria’s complex present, drawing lessons from the desire to determine one’s own destiny shown in 1876. Mayor Gagov suggested the anniversary should prompt reflection on unity, urging Bulgarians to regard the heroes of the April Uprising as relatable individuals. Boyko Vassilev noted that the discussions successfully connected the historical events to contemporary issues, concluding that the April Uprising remains an enduring element of Bulgaria’s political identity.
