Employment at AES Galabovo Power Plant Will Depend on Evolving Operations, AES Bulgaria Says

AES Bulgaria issued a press release on Friday confirming that the company must implement a controlled and safe shutdown, placing the Galabovo plant into conservation mode. This action is necessitated by the expiration of the long-term power purchase agreement between TPP AES Galabovo and the National Electricity Company (NEK). AES Bulgaria stated that this measured approach is designed to safeguard the facility and maintain potential for future operations.

The announcement addresses reports of mass layoffs at the power facility. Regarding employment, the company indicated that future job availability at the plant will depend on its evolving operational status, adding that AES Bulgaria has maintained transparency with its staff throughout the conservation process, treating all affected personnel respectfully. Furthermore, AES Bulgaria confirmed that it has proactively informed Mini Maritsa-East regarding the expiration of the contract supplying lignite coal for electricity generation.

The company emphasized its ongoing commitment to the Bulgarian energy sector, noting that it is in continuous dialogue with Bulgarian authorities and relevant stakeholders. These discussions aim to explore development opportunities that could allow the Galabovo facility to continue contributing to Bulgaria’s energy security and grid reliability. The statement clarified that these operational changes do not impact the Saint Nikola Wind Farm in Kavarna, which remains part of the investor’s portfolio.

Through this managed transition, AES aims to navigate the changes while keeping options open for the AES assets.
