‘s Social Democratic Party, Alliance for the Union of Romanians to Table No-Confidence Vote Against Bolojan Government

The Social Democratic Party (PSD), Romania’s largest parliamentary party, and the opposition far-right Alliance for the Union of Romanians (AUR) have announced a joint effort to table a no-confidence motion against the government led by Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan. The announcement was made via a joint statement on Monday. This development follows the resignation of several PSD ministers on April 23, which the PSD stated formalized the party’s decision to withdraw its political backing.

The PSD asserted that Bolojan no longer possesses the support of the parliamentary majority, thereby questioning his democratic legitimacy to lead the government. A representative from the PSD welcomed any colleagues willing to vote in support of the motion. AUR, while cooperating on the no-confidence proposal, clarified that their participation is not based on any agreement with the PSD.

AUR indicated that its primary political objective is to instigate early elections, citing the current government’s inability to manage the national economy. Despite the political challenge, Bolojan maintained that he would not resign and stated his intention to continue fulfilling his mandate while working on forming a minority government. Amid the escalating political instability, President Nicusor Dan held discussions during the week of April 20-26 with leaders from the ruling coalition parties.

The President confirmed that the coalition members had ruled out governing with anti-Western forces, specifically naming AUR. Discussions focused on maintaining stability and advancing key national projects, including the National Recovery and Resilience Plan, OECD accession, and the EU defense instrument SAFE, demonstrating the ongoing efforts to stabilize the political environment surrounding the social democratic bloc and the prime minister’s office.
