-UDF to Back Progressive Bulgaria Candidate for Parliament Chair

During the inaugural sitting of the 52nd National Assembly, MP Toma Bikov issued a declaration on behalf of the GERB-UDF parliamentary group. Bikov stated that the udf supports having a representative from the progressive party chair the Assembly, asserting that this recognition is due to the party’s victory in the recent elections. He clarified that this support should not be viewed as an attempt at negotiation or a specific political message, but rather as an effort to restore a parliamentary tradition and elevate the overall political standard within the institution.

According to Bikov, maintaining a higher political standard does not negate the existence of political disagreements; rather, it requires the opposition to actively represent citizens holding views different from the parliamentary majority and to ensure their right to express those views freely. The GERB-UDF also criticized the recent political climate in Bulgaria. The group noted that the nation has been governed by coalition governments over the past twelve years, with the last five years characterized by chronic political instability and an inability among parliamentary forces to establish a stable administration.

Bikov pointed out that this instability persisted despite the country’s need for stable decision-making in a volatile geopolitical environment, the necessity of systemic reforms, and a fiscal policy that has treated budget deficits as standard procedure. The group concluded by reiterating its long-standing call for an elevation in the quality of political debate, warning that recurring personal attacks and scandals undermine public trust in the entire political system and its foundational institutions.
