During the inaugural session of the 52nd National Assembly, the GERB-UDF parliamentary group announced its support for a candidate from Progressive Bulgaria to serve as the Chair. According to MP Toma Bikov, this endorsement stems from Progressive Bulgaria’s victory in the recent elections, positioning them as the rightful choice for the role. Bikov clarified that this action was intended not as a negotiation tactic or a specific political message, but rather as an effort to restore a perceived parliamentary tradition and elevate the overall political standard within the legislature.
The UDF emphasized that raising this standard does not negate political disagreement; rather, it mandates that the opposition must effectively represent citizens holding views contrary to the parliamentary majority, ensuring their right to open expression. On a broader note, the GERB-UDF group criticized the political landscape of Bulgaria, noting that the country has been governed by coalition governments for the past twelve years, with the last five years marked by chronic political instability and an inability to form a stable administration. Bikov stated that this instability occurred despite the need for crucial reforms across public systems and in the face of fiscal policies treating budget deficits as normal.
He added that in recent years, the group has repeatedly called for an increase in the quality of political debate, warning that personal attacks and scandals erode trust in the entire political system.
