During a conference hosted by BTA titled “150 Years since the April Uprising of 1876” in Panagyurishte, Sofia University Rector Prof. Georgi Valchev addressed the necessity of viewing history as an ongoing process rather than solely through traditional commemorative frameworks. The prof suggested that Bulgaria is navigating a period of significant complexity, drawing parallels to the circumstances faced by Bulgarians in 1876.
Prof. Valchev noted that 1876 represented a culmination of numerous efforts by Bulgarians to secure their political liberation. He emphasized that after repeated unsuccessful attempts to resolve the national question through international conflicts, the realization dawned that self-determination was essential.
This, he stated, was the primary lesson derived from the past. Considering the global conflicts of the present time, he stressed that history must educate the youth, demonstrating that heroism is not an unattainable ideal. The rector identified a second major lesson: the uprising stemmed from a profound belief in the nation’s future.
He argued that commemorations must initiate a continuous commitment to preserving memory by documenting historical events and reviving family narratives from that era. The third crucial lesson, according to the prof, involves faith in the younger generation, who historically bore the responsibility for the nation’s survival. He concluded that while accepting self-sacrifice is one thing, taking collective responsibility for the state’s organization is a duty incumbent upon the current society.
