-UDF to Back Progressive Bulgaria Candidate for Parliament Chair

During the inaugural session of the new 52nd National Assembly, the GERB-UDF parliamentary group announced its support for a representative from Progressive Bulgaria to serve as Chair. MP Toma Bikov stated that this endorsement was based on Progressive Bulgaria having won the recent elections. Bikov clarified that this gesture was intended not as a negotiation tactic or a specific political message, but rather as an effort to revive established parliamentary traditions and elevate the political standards within the assembly.

He elaborated that maintaining a high political standard does not negate political disagreement. Instead, he argued that it mandates the opposition’s role in representing citizens with differing views from the parliamentary majority, ensuring their right to express those views freely. Speaking on behalf of the group, Bikov addressed the political climate in Bulgaria, noting that the country has seen governance through coalition governments over the past twelve years, with the last five years marked by chronic political instability and an inability to form a stable government.

He emphasized that this instability occurred despite the need for crucial reforms across public systems and navigating an unstable geopolitical environment. Bikov also criticized the fiscal policy, suggesting that budget deficits have been treated as routine occurrences. He concluded by reiterating the group’s long-standing call for raising the level of political debate, warning that personal attacks and scandals undermine trust in the entire political system and its institutions.

The support for the Progressive Bulgaria representative marks a procedural move by the udf bloc within the Bulgarian legislature.
