, Bulgaria! Accuse Prosecutors of Being Used to Target Reformers After Pressure Claims by Interior Ministry Official

The Yes, Bulgaria party accused prosecutors on Friday of being utilized to target officials involved in institutional reform within Bulgaria. The statements followed claims by Interior Ministry acting Secretary General Georgi Kandev, who reported experiencing pressure and false testimony regarding unspecified misconduct. Speaking at a party briefing, Yes, Bulgaria co-chair Ivaylo Mirchev asserted that the prosecution service was once again being used as part of what he termed the “Borissov-Peevski model.”

Mirchev stated that the model continues to operate, suggesting the prosecution is being employed to target reformers.

These comments followed Kandev’s assertion that he had received calls from unknown numbers alleging that false testimony was being presented against him at the Sofia City Prosecution Office, which he believes aims to force his resignation. Furthermore, the party highlighted a new alert submitted concerning a journalistic investigation by BIRD. This investigation allegedly documented recordings involving former Supreme Administrative Court chairman Georgi Cholakov and an intermediary connected to bribery schemes.

Mirchev criticized the court’s role, suggesting powerful figures benefit from its decisions. In related actions, the party also indicated plans to request a parliamentary hearing concerning Delyan Peevski’s private jet travel. Co-chair Bozhidar Bozhanov noted that such travel was reportedly not declared in Peevski’s financial interests statement.

The party is pushing for an ad hoc committee to examine the financing of these flights, arguing that the judiciary and prosecution services should conduct thorough reviews of senior magistrates’ assets.
