, Bulgaria! Accuse Prosecutors of Being Used to Target Reformers After Pressure Claims by Interior Ministry Official

The Yes, Bulgaria party has accused prosecutors in Bulgaria of being politically manipulated, alleging the service is being utilized to target officials involved in institutional reform. These accusations followed statements by Acting Secretary General of the Interior Ministry, Georgi Kandev, who claimed he was subjected to pressure and false testimony regarding unspecified misconduct. Speaking at the party’s headquarters, Yes, Bulgaria co-chair Ivaylo Mirchev stated that the prosecution service appeared to be functioning as part of what he termed the “Borissov-Peevski model,” referencing GERB leader Boyko Borissov and Movement for Rights and Freedoms leader Delyan Peevski.

Mirchev asserted that the model remains active, claiming the prosecution is once again being used to target reformers. These remarks followed Kandev’s earlier statement on Facebook, where he reported receiving calls warning him to resign and alleging that false testimony was being presented against him at the Sofia City Prosecution Office. Mirchev characterized the current pressure against Kandev, caretaker Interior Minister Emil Dechev, and caretaker Prime Minister Andrey Gurov as an act of retaliation against efforts to ensure fair elections.

Furthermore, Mirchev announced that the party had submitted an alert to the prosecution regarding a journalistic investigation alleging bribery involving former Supreme Administrative Court chairman Georgi Cholakov. Co-chair Bozhidar Bozhanov urged the prosecution service to conduct thorough reviews of senior magistrates’ assets. The party also plans to request a parliamentary hearing concerning media reports suggesting Delyan Peevski used undeclared private jets for international travel, arguing this is inconsistent with his declared financial means in Bulgaria.
