-UDF to Back Progressive Bulgaria Candidate for Parliament Chair

During the inaugural session of the 52nd National Assembly, a representative from the GERB-UDF parliamentary group announced support for a nominee from Progressive Bulgaria to chair the new Assembly. MP Toma Bikov stated that this endorsement reflects the election victory of Progressive Bulgaria and is intended to elevate the political standard within the parliament. He clarified that the move should not be interpreted as a negotiation tactic but rather as an effort to revive parliamentary tradition.

Bikov emphasized that a higher political standard requires the opposition to robustly represent citizens with differing views from the majority, ensuring their right to open expression. Speaking on behalf of the group, the GERB-UDF criticized the political trajectory of Bulgaria, noting that the country has been governed by coalition governments over the past twelve years, with the last five years marked by chronic political instability and an inability to form a stable government. According to Bikov, this instability occurred despite the necessity for stable decision-making in an unpredictable geopolitical environment and the need for systemic reforms.

He also highlighted concerns regarding fiscal policy, which, he stated, has treated budget deficits as normal. The group leader reiterated previous warnings about the corrosive effect of personal attacks and scandals on public trust in Bulgaria’s political institutions. The GERB-UDF asserted its commitment to fostering a higher level of political debate moving forward.
