The Military Medical Academy (MMA) has upgraded its capabilities for air medical evacuation following the acquisition of new, high-specification medical equipment, according to the hospital’s press center. Five complete sets of advanced systems were purchased, encompassing vital signs monitors, ventilators, infusion pumps, oxygen cylinders, and additional gear such as defibrillators and suction pumps. This new equipment enables the maintenance of intensive care and resuscitation readiness during extended-distance patient transport.
With these resources, the MMA can conduct simultaneous air evacuations for up to five critically ill patients who require continuous monitoring and specialized treatment throughout the flight. The purchased systems are certified for use onboard aircraft and are ready for immediate installation, ensuring a rapid response capability in emergency scenarios. The MMA remains the sole hospital in Bulgaria that combines specialized medical equipment with trained teams dedicated to air medical evacuation.
In coordination with the Bulgarian Air Force, its teams are prepared to respond to mass disasters, accidents, and military conflicts requiring the swift evacuation and stabilization of numerous casualties. Prof Lyubomir Aleksiev, head of the Department of Aviation and Maritime Medicine at the academy, noted that the new equipment significantly enhances the ability to provide medical care in extreme conditions. He emphasized that air medical evacuation demands not only advanced technology but also highly trained personnel capable of operating in dynamic, high-risk environments.
The MMA maintains high operational readiness through regular training flights simulating various challenging scenarios, thereby improving coordination between its medical and aviation structures.
