More Measles Cases Reported, Bringing Total to 165

The Bulgarian Ministry of Health reported an increase in measles activity, with six new cases registered as of April 23. This latest data brings the cumulative total of measles cases in the country to 165. The recent cluster of infections was reported across several regions: two new cases were identified in Vratsa, two in Lovech, and one each in Pleven and Sofia.

In response to the outbreak, public health authorities have initiated comprehensive measures to protect the population’s health. Officials noted that the initial eight cases were first confirmed by the Ministry on March 19, originating in the Vratsa region. Following this initial detection, authorities issued an order mandating emergency immunization for all children who had missed scheduled vaccinations.

According to Iliya Tasev, Director of the Public Health Protection, Health Control and Patients’ Rights Directorate at the Ministry of Health, significant vaccination efforts have been undertaken. Since early March, a total of 20,000 children have received vaccinations covering measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR). These ongoing vaccination campaigns remain central to controlling the spread of the disease and mitigating further increases in reported cases.
