Gabriela Naplatanova, Chair of the Council for Electronic Media (CEM), asserted that only strong and independent journalism can ensure accountability for those in power. Speaking at the opening of the regulator’s first meeting of her second term on Thursday, Naplatanova urged journalists to maintain professional ethical standards and safeguard the dignity of their profession. She acknowledged the trust placed in the regulator’s members, noting that each member’s experience contributes significantly to the Council’s work.
Naplatanova stated that the CEM intends to remain accessible to society, journalistic organizations, the media industry, and academia, and plans to promote initiatives aimed at enhancing media content quality. The Chair clarified that the CEM’s role is primarily supportive, emphasizing that the ultimate responsibility for the media environment rests with journalists and creative professionals. Naplatanova cautioned that mere declarations are insufficient to protect freedom of speech and journalistic independence.
She stressed that only strong and independent media can foster critical thinking and enable society to make informed decisions about its future. While the members’ roles within the regulator are temporary, the effort to protect the media environment must be continuous. Naplatanova was elected Chair on April 23, nominated by Simona Veleva and Kadrinka Kadrinova, with support from Prolet Velkova.
Her term commenced on April 28 and extends until April 27, 2027.
