Regulator Head: Only Strong, Independent Journalism Can Hold Power Accountable

Gabriela Naplatanova, Chair of the Council for Electronic Media (CEM), asserted that only strong and independent journalism can effectively hold governing bodies accountable for their decisions. During the opening meeting of the regulator for her second term, Naplatanova urged journalists to uphold rigorous professional ethical standards and safeguard the dignity of their profession. She noted that while the CEM is committed to supporting the media ecosystem, the primary responsibility for the state of the media environment rests with journalists and creative professionals.

Naplatanova outlined the CEM’s future intent to engage with society, academic institutions, and the broader media industry, aiming to encourage initiatives that enhance content quality. However, she cautioned that formal declarations alone are insufficient mechanisms to guarantee freedom of speech or journalistic autonomy. Naplatanova emphasized that robust, independent media is crucial for enabling society to develop critical thinking skills and make informed decisions regarding its future direction.

The Chair stressed that while the regulator’s members serve in temporary capacities, the commitment to protecting the media environment must be continuous. Naplatanova, whose term commenced on April 28 and runs through 2027, reiterated the foundational role of the press. She maintained that the continued existence of strong journalistic practices is paramount, as these are the mechanisms that ensure accountability within the political sphere.
