Bulgaria’s Vitanov: In Few Days, We Will Be Called Upon to Take on Responsibility of Governing

Speaking from Parliament’s rostrum, MP Petar Vitanov addressed colleagues from Progressive Bulgaria, cautioning that the initial period of political enthusiasm would soon conclude. He stated that within a matter of few days, the party would face the practical responsibilities of governing and confronting the current state apparatus. Vitanov outlined immediate legislative tasks, including passing the national budget and resolving treasury issues.

Key priorities identified for Progressive Bulgaria include the election of a new Supreme Judicial Council and a new prosecutor general. He noted that achieving these goals requires a qualified majority and broader support beyond their own party. He emphasized that judicial reform is a matter of public necessity rather than a partisan issue.

The MP addressed the lingering influence of vested interests, stating that while certain groups faced setbacks, their institutional control requires a steady, sustained effort to dismantle. He stressed the necessity of maintaining stable parliamentary support for the executive branch in Bulgaria. Vitanov also criticized recent procedural actions taken by previous administrations, such as signing security agreements without parliamentary mandate.

He argued that these actions demonstrated a lack of statesmanlike approach. He expressed confidence that Progressive Bulgaria would uphold respectful conduct. Furthermore, he urged that Parliament function robustly, ensuring that Bulgaria’s international positions align with the interests of the Bulgarian people.

He concluded by asserting that the current opportunity allows the Bulgarian Parliament to become a driving force for transitioning toward a fully developed European democracy.
