Bulgaria’s Vitanov: In Few Days, We Will Be Called Upon to Take on Responsibility of Governing

Speaking from Parliament’s rostrum on behalf of Progressive Bulgaria, MP Petar Vitanov cautioned colleagues that the initial enthusiasm surrounding the election results would dissipate quickly. He stated that in the few days, the party would assume the responsibility of governance and would immediately confront the current state apparatus. Earlier, Rumen Milanov, the most senior MP present, opened the 52nd National Assembly session by administering the oath to the 240 lawmakers.

Vitanov highlighted immediate legislative priorities, including passing the budget and addressing treasury issues. He also emphasized curbing speculation. Key goals for Progressive Bulgaria include electing a new Supreme Judicial Council and a new prosecutor general, tasks requiring a qualified majority and broader coalition support.

Vitanov urged parties to avoid undermining the process, asserting that “Judicial reform is not a partisan cause, but a public imperative.” He noted that while oligarchs faced setbacks following the snap election on April 19, they still exert influence over the deep state and media. He stressed that dismantling this control will be a gradual process. Looking ahead, Vitanov stressed the necessity of maintaining stable parliamentary support for the executive branch.

He pointed to declining public trust in Parliament, citing citizen demands for higher ethical standards in the recent election. He expressed confidence that Progressive Bulgaria would uphold respectful conduct. Furthermore, he called for the end of passing crucial legislation in an incomplete chamber.

Regarding international relations, he stated that Bulgaria’s international positions must reflect the interests of the Bulgarian people, while acknowledging the EU’s potential for error. Vitanov concluded by asserting that the recent election victory provided an opportunity to transform the Bulgarian Parliament into a force for transition toward a European democracy.
