Zagora Mayor Zhivko Todorov Leaves Leadership of His GERB Party

Zhivko Todorov, the long-serving mayor of Stara Zagora and a prominent member of GERB, has announced his resignation from the party’s Executive Commission. In a public statement, Todorov cited a desire to dedicate his full attention to the development of Stara Zagora as the reason for his departure. The announcement comes amid a period of political transition for GERB, which recorded a 13.38% result in the recent snap parliamentary elections.

Days after the vote, Todorov participated in a news conference alongside GERB leader Boyko Borissov, where the party stressed the importance of preserving its right-wing and anti-corruption profile. Todorov’s decision follows his recent re-election to the Executive Commission, while the party’s highest body, the National Assembly, unanimously reconfirmed Boyko Borissov as the party leader. Borissov subsequently announced a new working arrangement, establishing a tandem structure involving Todorov and the Mayor of Burgas, Dimitar Nikolov, to support party operations.

GERB acknowledged the resignation via a Facebook post, framing it as a “personal act of responsibility.” The party acknowledged Todorov’s history with the organization, noting his contributions to Stara Zagora, while also stating that the party leadership was undertaking an analysis of its performance to identify areas for improvement. This move shifts Todorov’s focus entirely to municipal governance in Zagora, while GERB reorganizes its internal structures following the election results.
