At a national conference held at the Panagyurishte History Museum, Mayor Zhelyazko Gagov addressed attendees marking the 150th anniversary of the April Uprising. Speaking at the event, organized by the Bulgarian News Agency (BTA), Gagov urged Bulgarians to regard themselves as worthy inheritors of the ordinary citizens who became national heroes during the revolt. Gagov stated that the anniversary should serve as a moment for national reflection, emphasizing the importance of unity and national pride.
He suggested that the commemoration should achieve two primary goals: first, to establish it as a truly national observance, mirroring the original aspirations of the uprising; and second, to allow the populace to reconnect with history as a source of collective pride. The mayor noted that he observed a “deficit of pride” within the nation, viewing the anniversary as an opportunity to recall the achievements of past generations, while stressing that current Bulgarians share the same historical roots. He drew a contrast between the revolutionary zeal of the youth in 1876 and contemporary youth, suggesting a shift in focus from sacrifice to digital engagement.
Gagov emphasized that the figures of the April Uprising were not mythical characters but real individuals. He called for their legacy to be understood in human terms, asserting that the spirit of the heroes was embodied by everyday people. He concluded by urging Bulgarians to live up to the example set by those ordinary citizens who became monumental figures during the april uprising.
The conference is part of a broader BTA initiative marking the 150th anniversary and falls under the “14 Centuries of Bulgaria in Europe” series.

It’s always powerful to mark such historical anniversaries, but the emphasis on ‘worthiness’ can feel a bit heavy-handed.
