Zagora Mayor Zhivko Todorov Leaves Leadership of His GERB Party

Zhivko Todorov, the long-serving mayor of Stara Zagora and a prominent figure within the GERB party, has announced his resignation from the GERB Executive Commission, the party’s top executive body. Through a public statement, Todorov indicated that his decision stems from a desire to concentrate his efforts entirely on the development of Stara Zagora. He stated that he would dedicate his full attention and energy to the city’s advancement while thanking his colleagues for their collaborative efforts.

Todorov’s departure follows a period of political activity for the party, which recorded its weakest result of 13.38% in the recent snap parliamentary elections. Shortly after the vote, Todorov participated in a press conference alongside GERB leader Boyko Borissov, where the party emphasized the need to maintain its “right-wing and anti-corruption profile.”

The announcement comes despite Todorov having recently been re-elected to the Executive Commission. Furthermore, GERB’s highest body, the National Assembly, had unanimously reconfirmed Boyko Borissov as party leader.

In a subsequent move, Borissov announced that Todorov and the Mayor of Burgas, Dimitar Nikolov, would form a working tandem to support party structures. In response to Todorov’s resignation, GERB issued a statement accepting the move as a “personal act of responsibility.” The party acknowledged Todorov’s contributions, noting his success as a mayor in Stara Zagora, while also confirming that GERB has initiated an analysis to identify areas needing improvement within the party’s operations.
