The acting Secretary General of the Ministry of Interior, Georgi Kandev, stated on Friday that he faced pressure following an incident involving the Sofia City Prosecution Office (SCPO). In a Facebook video, Kandev recounted receiving multiple calls on Thursday from undisclosed numbers via a mobile application. He reported being informed that an individual known as “Kartofa,” along with associates, was providing false testimony against him at the SCPO.
Kandev alleged that these actions were orchestrated by a former Interior Ministry official named “Svetlyo.”
Kandev questioned the veracity of the testimony presented against him and sought to identify the orchestrators and the motive for the timing of the events. He concluded his statement by asserting, “Silence is not an option. I will not back down!”
Prime Minister Andrey Gurov publicly supported Kandev, characterizing the alleged pressure as a “vendetta” occurring at the SCPO under prosecutor Emilia Rusinova.
Gurov also criticized Rusinova, describing her role within the caretaker government. He suggested that the conspiracy against the Secretary General followed efforts to curb electoral misconduct. Interior Minister Emil Dechev echoed the support, stating that “old cops” were employing tactics to undermine Kandev.
Dechev affirmed the integrity of the Secretary General and emphasized the Ministry’s commitment to minimizing electoral crimes. Other political figures, including Assen Vassilev and representatives from the Yes, Bulgaria party, also criticized the situation, alleging that the prosecution service was being misused to target officials involved in institutional reform.
