Speaking from the rostrum of Parliament on Thursday, MP Petar Vitanov, representing Progressive Bulgaria, cautioned colleagues that the period of initial enthusiasm would soon conclude. He stated that within a matter of few days, the party would be expected to assume governing responsibilities and confront the state apparatus. During the opening sitting of the 52nd National Assembly, where the oath was administered to the lawmakers, Vitanov outlined immediate priorities.
He noted the necessity of passing the national budget and resolving treasury issues, alongside efforts to curb speculation. Furthermore, the election of a new Supreme Judicial Council and a prosecutor general were identified as major objectives for Progressive Bulgaria, tasks requiring a qualified majority and broad cross-party support. Vitanov emphasized that judicial reform is a public imperative, not a partisan issue.
He warned that the public expects high ethical standards from officials and that superficial maneuvering would not be tolerated. Regarding governance, he stressed the importance of securing sustainable parliamentary support for the executive branch. He addressed institutional stability, pointing to the need to prevent the passage of critical laws in incomplete chambers.
Vitanov urged that Bulgaria’s international positioning must reflect the will of its people, particularly as the nation remains integrated within the European Union. He also highlighted concerns regarding the recent actions of previous administrations, including signing agreements without explicit parliamentary mandates. Vitanov concluded by stating that the victory of Progressive Bulgaria offered an opportunity to guide the Bulgarian Parliament toward becoming a force for democratic transition.
He maintained that the nation must uphold a statesmanlike approach to ensure institutional balance.
