Review: May 4

President Iliana Iotova is scheduled to begin consultations with parliamentary groups on Tuesday regarding the formation of the next government in Bulgaria. Expectations suggest that the largest political force, Progressive Bulgaria, may receive the initial mandate to form a Cabinet by Thursday, potentially leading to an inauguration as early as Friday. Regarding the path forward, Anton Kutev of Progressive Bulgaria stated that an immediate priority for the majority coalition must be the adoption of a budget for 2026.

He noted that his coalition is developing a system to track prices and markups, anticipating its operational status within two to three months. Kutev indicated that the final structure of the new administration is subject to the ultimate decision of Rumen Radev, who is expected to lead the government. In separate political developments, analysts have noted internal divisions within the coalition, particularly between Continue the Change (CC) and Democratic Bulgaria (DB), questioning the viability of their current cooperative path.

Meanwhile, political shifts have been observed within established parties, with some members departing following recent elections. Economically, analyst Dimitar Chobanov highlighted concerns over inflation, pointing to sharp increases in specific goods like clothing and footwear. He argued that the manufacturing sector faces a crisis and that the economy’s current reliance on the service sector is unsustainable.

Chobanov further noted that achieving goals of rising incomes while simultaneously curbing inflation presents a significant challenge for the incoming administration. These economic pressures underscore the complex mandate facing the new government in Bulgaria, especially for the progressive political forces vying for influence.
