Following a public statement from Interior Ministry’s acting Secretary General Georgi Kandev, in which he indicated pressure to resign, Continue the Change (CC) leader Assen Vassilev issued a strong critique via Facebook. Vassilev asserted that in Bulgaria, whenever someone begins doing their official duties, they are allegedly targeted with false accusations. He characterized the alleged threats against Secretary General Kandev as highly irregular.
Vassilev further commented that achieving a prosperous and just Bulgaria aligned with European standards requires the immediate replacement of the Supreme Judicial Council and a comprehensive overhaul of the judicial system. This statement was accompanied by a photograph of Kandev, captioned with the hashtag “I won’t go home.”
Earlier on Friday, Kandev posted a video message on Facebook. In the recording, he stated that he had received a directive to resign but affirmed that he would not comply with threats or undisclosed arrangements.
Kandev specified that he had been informed that certain individuals, including a person known by the nickname “Kartofa,” had presented false testimony against him at the Sofia City Prosecution Office on Thursday. The sequence of events highlights ongoing friction within Bulgarian governance. Kandev’s public resistance to perceived external pressure contrasts with the political commentary from Vassilev, who advocates for significant structural reforms within the country’s legal institutions.
