Students Announce New Major Protest in May

Students in Serbia have announced plans for a new, large-scale protest scheduled for May, according to posts shared on their X profile titled “Students Win!”. Multiple posts from students involved in current university blockades have indicated intentions to organize a demonstration similar to the mass anti-government protests that occurred over the preceding year and a half. The initial wave of protests was prompted by the fatal incident on November 1, 2024, when a concrete canopy collapsed at a newly renovated railway station in Novi Sad, resulting in 16 deaths and several injuries.

In a recent communication, the students referenced dates of previous major demonstrations, specifically December 22, 2024, at Belgrade’s Slavija Square, along with March 15 and June 28, 2025. They stated that “this series will soon continue,” concluding with the phrase, “See you soon!”

The phrase “See you soon!” had been used previously in late 2024 when students began blocking universities and suspending classes in solidarity with the victims of the November 1 tragedy. Furthermore, on May 5, 2025, the group called for early parliamentary elections in Serbia.

The latest announcement suggests a new protest is anticipated in May, although a specific date has not yet been publicized. The communications maintain a continuity with past activist organizing, signaling sustained mobilization among the student body regarding national political issues.
