The Academic Council of Sofia University has unanimously backed an open letter advocating for the continuation of the Czech Centre in Sofia, following the institution’s announcement that it will cease operations in the Bulgarian capital. The Czech Centres network informed the public that, by directive of its Director General, the Czech Centre in Sofia will close, bringing its cultural and educational activities in Bulgaria to a conclusion. The Centre stated that scheduled events are set to continue until the end of May.
The facility holds significant historical standing, marking its 77th anniversary on May 5. It was originally established on that date in 1949 through an intergovernmental cultural agreement between Czechoslovakia and Bulgaria. Following the emergence of the Czech Republic and the Slovak Republic in 1993, the Czech Centres were established as successors to the former Czechoslovak cultural centers abroad.
Given this history, the Academic Council of Sofia University expressed profound concern regarding the planned closure. The council urged a reconsideration of the decision, emphasizing the Centre’s enduring cultural significance and its vital role in maintaining long-standing cultural ties between the Czech Republic and Bulgaria. The Centre in Sofia has long been recognized as one of the oldest Czech cultural institutions of its kind operating internationally, serving as a focal point for Czech-Bulgarian cultural exchange.
