On November 23, 2007, Bulgarian Deputy Culture Minister Nadezhda Zaharieva oversaw the unveiling of a monument dedicated to the eminent Bulgarian poet and author, Pencho Slaveykov (1866-1912), in Brunate, northern Italy. The ceremony commemorated the 95th anniversary of the poet’s death, as he spent his final years in the resort town overlooking Lake Como. The unveiling featured a bronze bust, sculpted by Valentin Starchev, mounted on a granite pedestal.
Following the dedication, an art-documentary exhibition titled “The Cultural Achievements of Pencho Slaveykov” opened at the town’s Villa Giuliani. The display showcased over 300 artifacts from the National Museum of Bulgarian Literature, including manuscripts, photographs, and personal documents, highlighting the literary significance of the poet. The observances concluded with a lecture by Prof.
Giuseppe Del’Agata of the University of Pisa, which addressed Bulgarian Studies in Italy and the translation of Bulgarian literature. Pencho Slaveykov was a pivotal figure in Bulgarian culture. Despite suffering from significant physical handicaps early in life, he channeled his experiences into profound creative work.
His poetry reflected deep philosophical contemplation, social criticism, and democratic ideals, often influenced by major European thinkers. After studying in Leipzig, he held significant roles in Bulgarian cultural institutions, including the National Library and the National Theatre. His profound contributions cemented his status as a critical intellectual analyst.
