On May 2, 1974, a significant fashion show took place in Ruse on the Danube, featuring 300 new models presented by several major Bulgarian manufacturing enterprises. The event showcased contributions from fashion houses including Boriana (Cherven Bryag), Arda (Ruse), Sanya (Pleven), Burya (Gabrovo), Druzhba (Varna), and Mizia (Pleven). Archive photographs from BTA capture the scene, noting the performance of young pop singer Tanya Emilova during the event.
The participating companies had established histories within the Bulgarian textile sector. Boriana was founded in 1968, while the iconic clothing manufacturer Arda was established much earlier in 1932, opening a new factory facility in the center of Ruse in 1968. Mizia began operations in 1960.
Furthermore, the Sanya textile factory in Pleven received approval for a conceptual expansion project from the Council of Ministers of the People’s Republic of Bulgaria in 1972. This period reflects the operational structure of the Bulgarian fashion and textile industry during the People’s Republic of Bulgaria (1946–1989), when manufacturing was centrally planned and state-owned. The industry’s primary focus was the mass production of goods intended for the domestic market and for export to other Eastern Bloc (Comecon) nations, most notably the Soviet Union.
